Despite being one of the most potentially powerful tools at our disposal, communication is also one that causes much damage. It is, however, a skill that can be developed in both individuals and organisations. Strategic communication is about identifying situational needs and requirements, and managing the behaviour through which we communicate to achieve our goals.
A “situational” approach to communication acknowledges that being a competent communicator requires that we:
* Understand the factors influencing a communication exchange
* Establish appropriate goals for a communication exchange
* Apply the most appropriate mix of assertiveness and responsiveness for different people in different situations.
Just as Dr Paul Hersey’s Situational Leadership® model of influence challenges us to identify the other person’s “task readiness” before employing a particular influencing style, so a “situational” approach to communication requires that we think first about the other person’s perspective towards the exchange. We naturally tend to rely on natural, preferred or “comfort zone” communication and influencing styles – styles that may be good but may also be the opposite of what our receiver actually needs in a particular situation in order to properly make sense of our communication.

Employing a trainee in your workplace will be a rewarding opportunity for your organisation. You will have the opportunity to help someone gain real skills in your workplace through both informal and formal training activities. The employer may be eligible to receive incentive payments from the Federal Government and subsidies training from the State Government. When you employ a trainee, you enter into a training contract, this is a legally binding document which is lodged with the Department of Employment and Training (DET).
You will need to have a Supervising Registered Training Organisation to help you work through the traineeship. We can help you with this! Specialised Training Services is a Registered Training Organisation with a User Choice Contract. We provide quality training and mentoring support throughout South East Queensland. |
